Sexual Dysfunction Expert, Belinda Wurn, Speaks Out Against Painful Intercourse
Belinda Wurn, PT, co-author of Miracle Moms, Better Sex, Less Pain
Sexual dysfunction and dyspareunia expert, Belinda Wurn, PT, discusses the prevalence of painful intercourse in women and what women and their physicians can do to better recognize and treat dyspareunia.
Gainesville, FL (PRWEB) – Over 70% of women surveyed in a large study in the ‘Journal of Family Practice (JFP)’ reported painful intercourse. Yet despite the high prevalence, women frequently do not discuss their sexual concerns with their physicians, according to the journal.
More than half of the women in the study also reported concerns of physical or sexual abuse, and over 40% reported sexual coercion at some point in their lives. “Experiences with abuse or coercion may explain why some women are hesitant to talk about their sexual concerns,” says physical therapist Belinda Wurn, an expert in treating the physical components of sexual dysfunction and dyspareunia.
Still, many other women with no history of abuse often conclude that painful intercourse is a normal occurrence for women and do not think to complain to their physician. They simply live with the pain or become disinterested in sex.
“When sex hurts, intercourse can become a time of silent agony instead of pleasure,” Wurn says. “Many women may attempt to avoid sex altogether due to the pain.”
Wurn should know. After a pelvic surgery and radiation for cancer of the cervix left her infertile and in pain, she searched for years to regain a pain-free sexual life. Now the tables are turned and she is conducting and publishing research on the work that got her out of pain.
The pelvic therapy she uses addresses a wholly physical component; it is designed to decrease vaginal and pelvic adhesions that form after trauma, infection, inflammation, or surgery. Untreated, adhesions can remain in the body for a lifetime where they act like glue, tightening tissues and causing pain.
Wurn’s findings have been published in several peer-reviewed medical journals, but “research is only one step in the right direction in helping women resolve their painful intercourse,” she says. “Healthcare professionals need to be stronger advocates and initiate conversations about sexual health with their patients. Sex should not hurt and women don’t have to live with it.”
“Women might want to keep a journal to assess their pain,” Wurn suggests. “They should note when the pain first started, how often it occurs, if it occurs at certain times during the monthly cycle or in certain coital positions, and if the pain occurs at the entrance or deeper within the vagina. Women should feel encouraged to discuss their journal with their gynecologist. If their doctor doesn’t listen, they should find another who will.”
Wurn and her husband recently co-authored Miracle Moms, Better Sex, Less Pain, (available Septembr 15, 2009) to help bring these issues to the forefront of medical care.

Miracle Moms Recommended by Columbia University Gynecological Surgeon Dr. Jacques Moritz

Dr. Jacques Moritz
As a gynecological surgeon I have seen first hand what happens after I operate on patients. As much as I try to prevent adhesions I know that most patients after surgery are going to develop some form of adhesive disease. In the past treatment for adhesions has been even more surgery which caused even more adhesions. Now with the amazing “Clear Passage” technique patients have a safe and effective alternative to surgery. Even though I don’t understand exactly how Clear Passage works, I know it does work and recommend it to all my patients with adhesive disease.

Dr. Mendoza Temple, Northwestern University Medical School, “Miracle Moms: What a much-needed, safe way to deal with adhesions”

Dr. Leslie Mendoza Temple
“What a much-needed, useful and safe way to deal with the common, yet mystifying problem of adhesions. I see many patients with this problem. I have referred them for integrative therapies like acupuncture, bodywork, yoga, and pelvic floor PT. The results have been pretty good, but variable. I am excited to see that you have studied and perfected a technique to treat adhesions, with years of experience, scientific ‘backup’ and case studies to prove it.”
“This makes sense: to put ‘hands on’ the problem and nurture the body’s innate desire to heal from pelvic pain, hormonal imbalance, endometriosis, infertility, and related dysfunction. Read this book if you suffer from pelvic or digestive disorders, or if you are a doctor who sees patients with these problems.”

“It’s about time! I’ve been waiting so long for Larry and Belinda Wurn to bring their magnificent healing modality to print. Over the many years I have known Larry, we have shared many patients who had previously been told that they would never conceive naturally, had complete tubal obstruction, scarring or intractable pelvic pain. I have seen their work help all of these conditions, and more. Their therapy is beyond surgical intervention; it taps right into the body’s inherent healing capacity. The Wurns are revolutionizing woman’s health. Tried and proven, documented and studied again and again – the proof is in the results. There are children alive today who wouldn’t be here without Clear Passage Therapies. I support and applaud this work.”

Alternative Therapy for Adhesion and Endometriosis Pain Examined in New Book “Miracle Moms, Better Sex, Less Pain”
In the upcoming book, “Miracle Moms, Better Sex, Less Pain,” researchers examine a non-surgical therapy to treat adhesion and endometriosis pain.
Gainesville, FL (PRWEB ) – Endometriosis is a painful and debilitating condition for millions of women and girls, robbing them of their quality of life. While the cause of endometriosis is unknown, some pioneering studies about a non-surgical treatment are now bringing hope for some women.
In the upcoming book, Miracle Moms, Better Sex, Less Pain, gynecologist Richard King, MD and a physical therapy team examine a manual physical therapy (Wurn Technique®) that has decreased or eliminated pain associated with endometriosis for many women.
The Wurn Technique® was originally created to treat the adhesions co-author and physical therapist Belinda Wurn developed after pelvic surgery and radiation therapy following a diagnosis of cervical cancer. “I had double-over pain,” she said. “I could not work or stand up straight. It hurt to sit and even to breathe; the pain was unrelenting.”
After the Wurn Technique resolved Belinda’s pain, she was able to return to work. She and her husband, massage therapist Larry Wurn began treating other conditions related to adhesions. They soon learned that adhesions and endometriosis pain were intimately related.

Endometrial implants bound with adhesions
Adhesions associated with endometriosis can cause pain anywhere in the body (abdomen, pelvis, low back). Dysfunctions such as poor digestion, irritable bowel, and infertility may also result from the adhesions and endometriosis. “We believe that the pull of adhesions on pain-sensitive structures is what causes the severe, debilitating pain in many women with endometriosis,” said Larry Wurn. “In fact, adhesions are frequently found in and near sites of endometrial implants.”
Women with endometrial implants often report a great deal of pain, which may occur
- before and during menstruation (dysmenorrhea),
- with ovulation,
- with sex (dyspareunia),
- with urination, bowel movements, diarrhea, or constipation.
While physicians do not know the exact cause of endometriosis pain, they often recognize an intimate relationship between endometriosis and adhesions; when they find endometriosis, they often find adhesions nearby.
The Wurns have published several studies on the Wurn Technique in peer-reviewed medical journals. Studies in ‘Medscape General Medicine’ (2004) and ‘Fertility and Sterility’ (2006) showed that the therapy improved fertility and decreased or eliminated endometriosis and intercourse pain in most participants. In a study from ‘Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine’ (2008) the therapy opened blocked fallopian tubes in women who had been diagnosed infertile. Many had natural pregnancies after their tube(s) opened, and some have had second natural pregnancies – indicating that the results of therapy lasted for years in some women.
Miracle Moms, Better Sex, Less Pain will be available September 15, 2009.

Miracle Moms Published Success Rates
The authors of “Miracle Moms, Better Sex, Les Pain,” Belinda Wurn, Larry Wurn and C. Richard King, are committed to conducting and publishing clinical research.
Only scientific observation, testing, and measurement can yield meaningful results, in any modality.Following is an overview of our published and pilot study highlights and success rates.
These are divided into various categories to make them easier to read. Footnote references following each statement give the study reference for that fact.
Natural fertility success rates
71% natural pregnancy rate within one year of receiving therapy 1
Note : Ongoing success rates with natural fertility reversal can be difficult to determine due to follow-up, 12 and 24 months after therapy. Judging from success rates we can easily measure (e.g. opening blocked fallopian tubes, IVF pregnancies after therapy) we believe our natural fertility success rate is between 60% and 65%.
Pre-IVF success rates
67% IVF clinical pregnancy rate for women who received therapy within 15 months of IVF transfer 1
Duration of infertility
- women in the above studies (natural and pre-IVF) were infertile for an average of five years prior to therapy 1
- longest duration of infertility successfully treated (natural pregnancy/birth) is 12 years 1
Live birth rates
- 90% of women who became pregnant in the natural fertility study delivered full-term babies 1
- 33% of these women had a subsequent pregnancy and live birth, suggesting that this treatment may have lasting effects for some women 1
- 79% of women who became pregnant in the pre-IVF study had live births 1
Blocked fallopian tubes
- 61% success rate opening blocked fallopian tubes 2,8
- 53% natural intrauterine pregnancy rate for the patent patients 2,8
- 66% patency (one or both tubes open) rate for patients with proximal blockage 2
- 50% patency rate for patients with distal blockage 2
- 40% patency rate for patients with mid-tubal blockage 2
- 80% patency rate for patients with combination blockage 2
Hydrosalpinx
- 50% (4/8 patients) success rate opening tubes blocked with hydrosalpinx 3
- 50% (2/4 patent patients) had a natural post-therapy full-term pregnancy via the tube previously blocked with hydrosalpinx 3
